City Atlantique Road Show

As the city welcomes the return of the largest indoor antiques show in the world, it has been announced that some very rare pieces of Atlantic City memorabilia are being placed on display. Some of these finds have not seen the light of day in decades. Our inhouse antique experts were given a sneak peek to these historical pieces and returned awestruck. We have selected the cream of the crop and used our vast knowledge of Atlantic City history to analyze and estimate a rough sale value for the items. We hope everything finds a caring home where the priceless history of Atlantic City will be preserved.

Diving Horse
The petrified remains of Atlantic City's first diving horse have been offered up as a CityAtlantique collectable. The horse's name was Yamm, the Arabic name for "Sea or Ocean". Yamm had a long and eventful life filled with adventures not many people know about. After his time in Atlantic City (during which he thrilled tourists by diving into a tank on the Steel Pier), he spent many years in Hawaii and the tropics diving for pearls. After three failed attempts, he was the first horse to swim across the English Channel. Yamm was also declared a war hero when he stormed the beaches of Normandy with the Allies and carried three wounded soldiers to safety. He spent the rest of his life in France and became a favorite riding partner of Charles de Gaulle. He was lost during a failed attempt to cross the Mediterranean. He was recently found by Robert D. Ballard of the Woods Hole Institute.
Appraised Value:
$125,000

Trump Plan
One of the architectural firms that submitted bids to Donald Trump for the project that would eventually become the Trump Taj Mahal has fallen upon hard times. To generate some revenue, they've put some of the rejected blueprints and renderings of the proposed structures up for sale. Some of the notable plans include the Trump Acropolis, Trump Coliseum and of course, the Trump Sphinx - which reportedly would have been the biggest, classiest, most luxurious replica of an ancient monument ever.
Each Plan:
$18,000

1st Shoebee Box
Recent excavations on the Atlantic City beach have unearthed a box that's over 100 years old. The dense sand vacuum-sealed the box and perfectly preserved a sandwich as well as a sales receipt from a long-defunct shoe store in Philadelphia. The combination of the sandwich and receipt led scientists and a group of local historians to conclude that this box is actually the first shoebee shoebox. The original owner of this box inspired his contemporaries, who were also traveling from Philadelphia to Atlantic City for the day, to bring their lunch in a shoebox too- and also apparently to discard the boxes on the beach. Eventually this coined the phrase shoebee.
Appraised Value:
$800,000.

Taffy Recipe
In 1880, a young candy merchant named David Bradley had a stand on the Boardwalk. One night the little stand, which was only a couple steps from the sand, was flooded by an evening storm. Bradley returned to his stand the next day to find all his candy soaking in ocean water. This eventually led to the creation of Salt Water Taffy. What most people don't know is that there were other recipes that were inspired by this event that never made it into production. Collectors now have the opportunity to purchase the recipes for less-successful sweets such as: saltwater macaroons, kelp-candy, ocean-pops and seagull suckers.
Valued at:
$2 per recipe

Mr. Pennypacker
As many of our readers know, the board game Monopoly is based upon Atlantic City. Ventnor Ave, St. James Place, Park Place and Marvin Gardens are all places that still exist today. What people might not realize is that Mr. Monopoly, also known as Mr. Moneybags is based upon an Atlantic City socialite named Icabod Pennypacker. His many heirs recently had his remains exhumed to search for the single card that acts as deed to the Boardwalk, but nothing was found except a thimble, a silver shoe, small pewter dog and a stack of small, orange $500 bills. These items as well as Pennypacker's monocle and top hat are up for auction.
