Howie
Mandel
Resorts Atlantic City
February 14 2009
The improvisational comedy king launched a new network show
“Howie Do It” in January 2009. This hidden-camera program
targets real people, and these people are put in odd and
embarrassing situations while cameras roll. There is one slight
twist though: Mandel - well-known for being a germaphobe and
being averse to handshaking - bases some of the material on his
battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
The actor and comedian is also currently hosting the wildly
popular television game show, NBC's Deal or No Deal. In fact,
Mandel received a nomination at the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy
Awards in the category of “Outstanding Host for a Reality or
Reality-Competition Program." This year marked the first that
such an award was given.
Despite his recent surge in fame from the Deal or No Deal
phenomenon, the Canadian-born Howie Mandel has been a constant
force in show business for more than 30 years. From the small
screen to the big screen to the stage, Mandel has established
himself as a versatile talent, equally comfortable in dramatic
and comedic roles. But it was comedy that kick started his
career and it's what he is known best for even today. His career
began in 1979, when on a dare, he took the stage at Los Angeles'
famed Comedy Store on amateur night. Mandel was so impressive,
that a producer who happened to be in the audience hired him to
appear on the game show Make Me Laugh.
From there, the success started to mount. Mandel did numerous
talk show appearances – a circuit he still continues to this
day, as he makes for a great interview. He's also a great
interviewer, as he is often tapped to fill in for Regis Philbin
on Live with Regis and Kelly. He once had his own talk show, The
Howie Mandel Show."
The multi-talented Mandel has made forays into children's
entertainment, earning Emmy nominations for his animated series,
Bobby's World, which he created. The show ran for eight seasons
and today is an international hit as it is syndicated in 65
countries. He helped write the show and also voiced characters
for it. Gifted in creating voices, he also provided the voice
for many characters, including Gizmo in both Gremlins and
Gremlins 2 – the hit movies of 1980s and 1990s.
Once best known for his famous "latex glove over the head bit,"
Mandel has emerged as a highly sought-after actor who has
appeared in numerous films and television shows. For years he
has been making cameos on hit shows (My Name is Earl, Monk,
Medium, Sesame Street and others) as well as regular appearances
on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Named one of Comedy Central's 100 best stand-up comedians of all
time, Mandel tirelessly continues to perform as many as 200
shows each year. Plus, he recently received a coveted star on
Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
