Dave
Pena, together with his business partner, opened Planet Rose Cocktail and
Karaoke Lounge in the Quarter at Tropicana. Originaly a location in the
East Village of New York City, opened in 2001. - Planet Rose's concept:
karaoke and cocktails in a funky, sexy, neon and hot pink and animal print
lounge setting. Previously, David worked in the entertainment/television
production business in NYC for more than ten years.Do you live in Atlantic City? If so, how long have you lived here?
I live just outside the city. My family and I split from New York to South
Jersey last summer and we couldn't be happier.
Tell us about your family.
I have a beautiful wife and a gorgeous 4-year-old daughter. They are my world,
literally. When I'm not working, which is very rare, I'm chilling out with
them.
What do you like most about Atlantic City?
It's originality. This city has real character. It's got a history and
it just keeps making history. Even before the casinos it was an original; it's
never been a cookie cutter destination spot, never will be and never should be.
Describe your perfect day in Atlantic City.
Check into Tropicana with my family, hit the boardwalk, beach, pool, get a
massage, shower, gourmet dinner, headliner concert and martinis and karaoke at
Planet Rose!
What originally brought you to AC?
My mom and dad brought my brother and I here when we were kids. Even though
I was very young, I felt an instant connection with this city. It's no
accident that Planet Rose's second location is in The Quarter at Tropicana in
Atlantic City. It's always been my dream to do something great here. So I
pursued it and here we are!
Where do you see the city in 10 years, and how do you see yourself as a
part of this change?
Booming. Expanding. The biggest vacation destination on the East
Coast. The first and most important goal is to continue to make Planet
Rose a success. My business partner and I strive for its longevity. Nightclubs
come and go, but Planet Rose, both in NYC and in AC, is unique enough to go the
distance and stay fresh, like Comedy Stop, which has stood the test of time. We've
been fortunate to find such an awesome staff, from management, bartenders and
talent, to help us see our vision through. It's important to have a tight
crew. My partner and I are business people, but we are also creative types. We
are interested in continuing to create entertainment/bar/restaurants with unique
concepts and unexpected surprises. We never want to do anything normal!
Tell us about your favorite AC memory.
I have a few very vivid memories that always make me smile. Room service
breakfast with my family as a kid, riding the ferris wheel at TropWorld, and my
dad, my brother and I sipping virgin pina coladas served by Playboy bunnies
while sitting in a Jacuzzi at the Playboy Hotel.
Do you play in the casino?
The funny thing is, although I love the casino environment, I do not gamble.
You've got two hours to kill on the boardwalk, what do you do?
Two whole hours? Just walk and feel the ocean breeze, or go to Steel Pier,
or have a caesar salad at Opa.
Why should I go to Planet Rose?
To let loose, celebrate, drink, sing, dance, meet old friends and make new
ones in a very fun and sexy lounge!
What's your favorite casino? Bar? Restaurant?
Tropicana is my home! But, with so many choices, it's impossible say which
bars and restaurants are the best. Plus, I'm still discovering places I didn't
know existed.
What's your favorite thing to do in AC outside the casino?
I'm always around music and a lot of people, so sometimes it's nice to
just grab an ice cream at Create-a-Cone and sit alone on a boardwalk bench
watching the sea gulls.
What's the wildest thing you've ever seen in Atlantic City?
Wildest thing I've ever seen? That's every night at Planet Rose. The
customers never stop surprising me.
What three words describe Atlantic City best?
Casinos, Ocean, Entertainment
Dealer shows 17, you've got a pair of 8s - how do you play them?
I don't know. Ask my wife.
