The Best Jobs In Ac

EDITORIAL REVIEW

In a town like Atlantic City, there's opportunity for everyone. You can go legit or you can discover other, "less restricted" prospects. You can make quick cash, or you can secure a career with pension; it's up to you. That being said, we've decided to explore Atlantic City's scope of employment. Who's got the best gig in town? Who's really supporting this beach resort? What job offers the best pay-for-skill ratio? There are some high-profile gigs in this city. There are lucrative jobs that exist more or less "behind the scenes." And there are some adventurous jobs unique only to Atlantic City. After all, this is a 24-hour gambling town where anything goes, and there's plenty of money to be made. Well then.... Who's workin' it?

1 Lifeguard
If you've ever met a former AC Lifeguard and ask them about it, they will definitely start their story with a sigh filled with recollections of long summer days and good times...many, many good times. By far, being a lifeguard is the absolute best job in Atlantic City. Where do we begin? You get paid to lay-out on the beach; the job is seasonal and the money can hold you over for the winter (don't forget about the pension too); chicks dig you for it; you're always in shape; there's a lot of people watching which in turn gives you the opportunity to be a hero on a daily basis; you get to go out in the ocean in those cool row boats; and, of course, you get to work on your best Hasselhoff impression. "Baywatch" is an actual reality for these dudes! Wow, that's a good gig.

2 Borgata Babe
The Life
Perhaps the number one job when it comes to "easy money." All you have to do is carry a tray of drinks and be good looking. Sh*t, just be good looking. In fact, these babes must be so good looking that The Borgata has even implemented a contract with these girls stating that they can't gain more than 7% of their hired body weight. And it is because of such strict stipulations that the Borgata Babe Calendar hangs in just about every office in town and the casino floor is perennially packed. That aside, some of these girls walk with $1000 a night! Let's see, serve a few Long Island Ice Teas with a little extra wiggle and you can leave work that night with a grand. That's worth ten extra minutes on the treadmill, isn't it?

3 Nightclub Manager
VIPs This Way
Fights, drug overdoses, sex in the bathroom, this job is all about being king of the wild side. It takes a brave soul to venture into managing the chaos found at most nightclubs during the wee hours. Finding just the right levels of debouchery and prudence presents a lot of problems and a lot of pressure. But at least it's all going down under your roof. And the rewards are insurmountable for those who indulge such a lifestyle: all the big wigs want to hang with you; all the hot chicks are kissing your ass to get into the V.I.P room; you get free drinks; you get to pick the music; you choose how late to stay open, etc. Put simply, when you're the club manager, you da man.

4 Flare Bartender
Do Hippie Shake
No doubt one of the coolest gigs in AC, flare bartending lends little effort for big-time cash. Flip a few bottles around, tell a few jokes, and rake in the green. Plus, besides the booze, you're the main event. You get to be the center of attention while you're making money and meeting chicks. Everyone wants to live out their Tom Cruise "Cocktails and Dreams" fantasy. (Don't they? Is it just us?) Who cares what's in a cosmo? Just twirl the bottle a few times and make the damn thing look pink---she'll be smitten (and buzzed) after two glasses. And she'll be tipping you too!

5 Magazine Publisher
Covergirl Search is On Now
There's no job in Atlantic City quite like being a magazine publisher. It's a challenging job, but the perks make it all worthwhile. You get invited to all the biggest parties; you deal on a daily basis with beautiful women who are just dying to model for you; you occasionally get to hob-knob with all types of celebrities; eat in the finest restaurants and smoke the finest cigars... and the best part of it all-- you get to do it all beneath the radar. Plus, what's the old saying? "Never mess with a guy that buys ink by the barrel". You get the joy of being connected without too many of the burdens. Damn it's good to be the publisher.

6 Boxing Promoter
Only in America
When asked why he chose his field of work, boxing promoter Dan Gossen replied: "I looked in the phonebook under boxing promoters and there were only two names - Bob Arum and Don King. Then I looked under doctors and lawyers and there were pages full of names. It wasn't a hard choice." Great promoters are few and far between. But the good ones get some major dollars by setting up and promoting one of the most exciting sports in the world. It's a game of stamina, both pugilism and the promotion thereof, but the rewards for each outweigh anything lost in a few three-minute rounds.

7 Casino Host
Power of the Pen
Casino Hosts are kind of like the "legal" version of the Mafioso. They wheel and deal, move and shake; they make things happen that seem impossible to people like us. However, instead of using muscle to get what he wants, he uses charm. And what rewards are thereupon reaped? Big tip, after big tip, after big tip - and then there's the occasional immense tip. Perhaps a solid relationship or two with some well-off clients. Maybe even a few broads here and there, or the keys to a mobsters condo in Miami. Aside from the dealers, casino hosts are the most visible and accessible of all casino employees. That makes them very important to a lot of wealthy people, and of course the casinos that rely upon them to bring in the big game.

8 Mafioso
Out of Respect
Are mobsters cool? Fuhgeddaboutit! What's more cool than being "connected?" Few jobs in this world offer the paradox of fame and infamy so generously, and at such a fast, yet ever so cautious, ever-so respectful, pace. What other occupation gets you V.I.P treatment everywhere you go because you happen to spend your days influencing labor unions, paying-off cops and racketeering? In what other line of work do you hear about wiseguys who strip down to their underwear to chop up a body on a Saturday night, then get all dressed up to go to mass with their families on Sunday morning. Do we really know anything about the Mob or do we just watch a lot of The Sopranos. We ain't telling you stugots... capice?

9 Golf Pro
It's The Balls
Being a golf pro has got to be one of the safest, most stress free occupations on earth. Let's see: for the most part you are your own boss; you get paid big bucks for participating in a sweat-free game that you'd be playing anyway during your free time if you had the menial 9-to-5 gig; you get to work (with minor physical exertion) outside in the fresh air; and there will always be a long line of wealthy business-types who wish they had your golf swing to keep your ego boosted and your occupational continuation secure. Oh, and let us not forget about the major endorsements some of these big-name pros get. As one pro put it: "it's a hell-of-a-lot easier to make a five-footer on Sunday afternoon when there's already a big number in the bank."
