EDITORIAL REVIEW

Formerly known as the Atlantic County Historical Museum, The Atlantic Heritage Center is a non-profit organization that "encourages the study of local history and genealogy." Obviously many of the museum's pieces can be directly tied to the area. The museum currently boasts a collection of more than 20,000 items, ranging from a continental dollar, to 17th-century documents, to an 1870s bed. A number of artifacts shed light on Atlantic County's intriguing maritime heritage, including weaponry and aboriginal artifacts. Shipbuilding was one of the major 19th-century industries in Atlantic County. An impressive fine arts collection, in addition to textile items and historic clothing, is also on hand for visitors. Admission to the museum is free and volunteer docents are on hand to guide you through the exhibits. At a leisurely pace, expect to spend about an hour here.
