Go back in time more than two centuries with a stay at The Dr. Jonathan Pitney House, an historic bed & breakfast inn located about 5 miles from downtown Atlantic City. Originally built in 1797, the colonial-style home was purchased in 1833 by a then 21-year-old medical doctor by the name of Dr. Jonathan Pitney, a man who, posthumously, would be referred to as “The Father of Atlantic City.”
Aside from his medical achievements, Pitney is known for being responsible for the construction of the railroads that cross through the salt marshes to Absecon Island, now Atlantic City. His efforts sparked the Federal Government to construct and commission a lighthouse at the north end of the island, finally putting an end to the scores of shipwrecks along the shoals and beaches near "Graveyard Inlet." The lighthouse still stands today as one of Atlantic City’s most treasured historical attractions.
Dr. John’s Pitney House is comprised of two buildings: the Pitney Manor House (the property’s main house), and the Dr.’s Guest Quarters, a separate addition to the Manor House that Pitney had built in 1848. Today the Guest Quarters comprise the B&B’s only four suites, and have been carefully restored to reflect their original Italiente style.
Dr. John’s is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway, offering the warm and friendly ambiance of a by-gone era, complete with an attention to detail that remains unparalleled. Guests enter the Manor House through the center hall, furnished with wide pine flooring and an attractive staircase that leads to the bedrooms upstairs. To the right of the hall is the intimate Granville Parlor, where guests can gather for conversation or peruse the large collection of medical antiques. Across the hall from the parlor is the Colonial Dining Room, appointed with warm mahogany furnishings and delightful antiques. If that doesn’t entice you, perhaps the tantalizing aroma of fresh breads and delectable entrees wafting in from the adjacent kitchen will draw you in.
Upstairs on the second and third floors are the beautifully appointed guestrooms. All of the inn’s six guestrooms feature a private bathroom with early 1900s clawfoot soaking tubs with showers, with exception of the "Absecum" Room, which has a shower only. Each bedroom is individually named and designed, with two of the rooms tastefully furnished with period antiques, and the remaining four rooms designed in Victorian vogue settings. For instance, the Jonathan Room, one of the two rooms located in the original 18th-Century section of the house, features period paintings and 18th- & 19th-Century antiques; while the Caroline Room, named after the Doctor's wife, is furnished in High Victorian style with antiques of rare and inlaid wood and marble.
At the west side of the Commonyard is the Dr.’s Guest Quarters, which consists of four elegantly appointed suites. Each suite is a treasure-trove of antiques and collectibles, a wonderful compliment to the modern conveniences that are available here. Guests can enjoy everything from a relaxing whirlpool bath to cable television and VCR movies. While second-floor suites have private verandahs, the suites on the ground floor have their own secluded sitting areas.
The "Far East Suite" located on the second floor is decorated with exceptional pieces from around the Orient. Also on the second floor, the "Enoch Doughty Suite," named after Doctor Pitney's best friend - the High Sheriff of Gloucester County and a General with the New Jersey Militia – is handsomely decorated with antiques and local heirlooms.
The "Ante-bellum Suite" on the ground floor is decorated in a Southern theme, featuring period furniture of the mid-1800s and a handmade bed made from late-19th-century Paris. The Philadelphia Suite, also on the ground floor, is tastefully appointed with colonial revival furniture, and features an ADA accessible bath.
Staying at Dr. John’s can be a truly unique vacation experience. Atlantic City is just a 10-minute drive from the inn - a straight shot down Route 30 (White Horse Pike) – offering a large variety of world-class gaming, dining and nightlife, as well as the famous Boardwalk and beaches. Additionally, the area immediately surrounding the inn is not without its places of interest. For instance, down the street is the renowned High Point Pub, a local favorite open 24 hours a day. The High Point is famous for serving huge portions of very tasty food, ranging from sandwiches and burgers to full dinner entrees, desserts and more. About 5 miles from the inn is the village of Historic Smithville, known for its antique shopping, historical sites and gourmet restaurants.
